The Tragic Thread in Science Fiction by Robert H Waugh (former Professor of English at the State University of New York at New Paltz), is published this month by Hippocampus Press. It contains a trilogy of essays on A Voyage to Arcturus, among them "The Drum of A Voyage to Arcturus", which was first printed in Extrapolation (vol. 26, no. 2, Summer 1985), and is an excellent exploration of the novel's "simultaneous three- and four-part structure". The other Lindsay essays examine the novel's "relations to the work of Goethe and its distinctive vocabulary".

As well as Lindsay, Waugh's book includes essays on other speculative fiction authors, including Olaf Stapledon, Arthur C Clarke, William Gibson, Fritz Leiber, James Tiptree Jr, and Lovecraft.

The Tragic Thread in Science Fiction is published by Hippocampus Press. More details, and ordering information, can be found at the book's page on their site.
